THE APT LIES

Lie, that’s what they do. They lie to protect, protect the people and the country. They had made me lie too, to everyone in my life. I was dead to my family so I could live the lie they had carefully crafted for me. I don’t remember much of what I had seen, but what I did remember was enough to put an atrocious criminal behind bars. I wished I hadn’t seen it, but I did. I kept reassuring myself that this is for the good of all and that I have to leave my life behind, to live the rest of my life as a lie, as they had insisted this was the only way.

Months passed I lived my new life peaceably. But the thought of my old life kept nagging my brain. One day I thought they had made me lie so much, so what was one more lie. So the following day I lied again this time I lied to them and made the call I was longing for. “Hello” she said. I savoured her voice, for it was like water in desert for me. Then I told her everything, but I also told her to stay away. But before I could finish, they came and ended the call. I was furious at them, but later when I faced the consequence of my call, when I stared at her dead body, I realised sometimes a lie said for the right cause is more powerful than even the truth, for its better to be in the dark sometimes.

They already knew it and told me to simply take it as a life lesson and move on. They had done this before as I was not the only witness in need of protection. They were the witness protection programme.
